Mike Fox in Makai Magazine |
by Shannon Chang
“The first time I surfed anywhere else but there [White Plains] was Makaha. We rarely went into Waikiki so that was the next spot I surfed. I can remember the first time going out there I probably was about 12 or so, a young kid, and I remember Buff coming down a wave and just taking his board as I was paddling out and turning it over in front of me and I was just like ‘Wow.’ It’s wild because he is one of the first great surfers I ever remembered.” Little did Fox know that he would one day compete in Buffalo Keaulana’s surfing classic, and develop some life long friendships with Keaulana’s family and friends.

|
ESPN Reporter Lisa Salters tells the story of UH Football Coach Jeff Reinebold and a lifelong UH fan Brian Kajiyama. The clip shows Jeff and Brian out surfing on a C4 Waterman boards.
Here's the ESPN summary of the segment its calling, ""Heart of a Warrior:"
"Brian Kajiyama was born with cerebral palsy, which stripped him of
his ability to speak and confined him to a wheelchair. However, his
affliction has never been an impediment for the Hawaii native. Instead,
it has propelled him to break as many barriers as possible.
ESPN's prime-time newsmagazine E:60 aired Tuesday, September 30, at 7 p.m. ET.

A year ago, there were 40 entries in a stand-up paddle surfing
contest at Kuhio Beach, and almost all of them were professional
surfers or experienced watermen.
At this week's C4
Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle Surfing contest at Kuhio Beach,
there were more than 80 entries, including women, children and
experienced businessmen.
"I'm not surprised at all, to be
honest," said Todd Bradley, one of the founders of the C4 Waterman
company. "From the start, everybody we turned on to the sport got
hooked. So to see all these kids and women and newcomers to the sport
... I think it's just the beginning."
