C4 WATERMAN & HONOLUA SURF
Stand Up Paddle Surfing Competition Presented by Blue Planet
August 17-24, 2008
Queen's Beach, Waikiki, HAWAII
HONOLULU - (August 19, 2008) - As the Olympic games takes charge of the international sporting arena, Hawaii's most famous Olympian and ambassador of Hawaii's greatest gifts to the world -- aloha and surfing -- is at the center of celebrations in his birthplace of Waikiki: Duke Kahanamoku.
The Duke's OceanFest continued today with the C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Surfing competition - a sport Duke helped pioneer towards the end of his surfing days.
While the sport first surfaced in Waikiki more than half a century ago, it took a second wave of popularity for SUP to circle the globe and take center stage back where it all began.
Today, reflecting the international appeal and dynamic growth of SUP, the C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf event - part of Duke's annual birthday celebrations, attracted a record field of 84 entries from as far afield as Australia and Oregon for the opening day of competition.
With more than twice the entries of last year's inaugural event, this year's competition lineup expanded to include professional, amateur, women's and junior division. Three rounds of competition were completed today at Queen's Beach, Waikiki, determining the lineup for Saturday's finals:
Professional: Brian Keaulana (Makaha), Noland Martin (Makaha), Noah Shimabukuro (Kula, Maui), and female challenger Candice Appleby (Honolulu)
Amateur: Slater Trout (Lahaina, Maui), Stuart Murray (Australia), Dennis Matos (Waipahu), Chris Martin (Honolulu), Mike Mendez (Honolulu), Bill Ward (Haleiwa)
Women: Jennifer Koki (Honolulu), Tiare Lawrence (Makaha), Heather Jeppesen (Honolulu), Candice Appleby (Honolulu), Pinoi Makalena (Honolulu), Geodee Clark (Honolulu)
Juniors: Kawika Kinimaka (Lahaina, Maui), Brendan Bradley (Honolulu), Kai Lenny (Paia, Maui), Noah Yap (Kihei, Maui)
Stand-up paddle surfing combines the elements of two traditional Hawaiian ocean sports: canoe paddling's paddle, and longboarding's surfboard. Surfers paddle into waves and ride, always in the standing position, and are scored on critical surfing maneuvers.
Today's 2-3 foot, rolling surf at Queen's Beach was the stage and many of the sport's top exponents put on a stellar display for the thousands of tourists who are new to the sands of Waikiki and the sport of stand-up paddle surfing.
A portion of all proceeds generated through their events and on-site t-shirt sales will go to support the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.
Complete results from today's competition follow below.

C4 Honolua Stand-up Surfing Contest Heat Sheet

The primary
objectives of the weeklong festival are to honor the legacy of Duke
Kahanamoku, provide a Waikiki water sports celebration for residents
and visitors to enjoy, and raise funds for ODKF's college scholarship
and athletic grants program. Last year, Duke's OceanFest generated more
than $30,000 for ODKF.
“Duke's
OceanFest is the best week of the year to enjoy Waikiki Beach. It's
incredibly fun for residents and visitors alike and is all based on the
long and storied water sports tradition that Duke Kahanamoku and
Hawaii's other watermen established over the years,” said ODKF
President Patrick Dugan.
Events scheduled for Duke's OceanFest include the following:
- Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic (August 22 & 23) Sponsored
teams comprised of four amateur surfers and a Hawaii surf legend
compete over several days in a competition run like a pro surf meet
with heats, judges, scoring, public address announcer, and exhibit
booths. Proceeds raised from the team sponsorships go to ODKF's
scholarships and grants program.
- C4 Waterman Honolua Surf Stand-Up Beach Boy (August 19 & 23) The growing popularity of stand-up paddle surfing is showcased in this Waikiki event.
- Lanikai Canoe Club's 41st Annual Duke Kahanamoku Classic (August 17)
The opening event of Duke's OceanFest week, this 24-mile open ocean
course will challenge canoe teams to race from Kailua to Duke
Kahanamoku Beach.
- Tandem Surfing (August 20 to 23) Having two on the board is better than going solo in this entertaining, acrobatic dance duet of surfing.
- Roxy Jam Honolulu Pro Women's Surf (August 20 to 23) Waikiki's only women's longboard surf meet attracts competitors worldwide to crown the queen of Waikiki.
- Waikiki Beach Boys Legends Celebration at Duke's Waikiki (August 22) Known as Ho‘ohanohano Na Kanaka O Ke Kai this event is a poignant gathering of former beach boys and old friends of Duke sharing fond memories of Waikiki. (to honor the men of the sea),
- Corona Extra Duke Classic Beach Volleyball Tournament (August 23) Four-person teams – three men and one woman – take to the sand for this daylong tournament at Kuhio Beach.
- Hawaii Paddleboard Championship (August 23) “Duke's
Race” starts at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai and finishes at Duke's
Statue in Waikiki and features some of Hawaii's best watermen and
waterwomen. The 2007 race had 125 competitors.
- Duke’s Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim (August 23)
Just like Duke did, hundreds of swimmers gather in front of Duke’s
Waikiki restaurant at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach for this
one-mile open ocean sprint.
- Surf Polo Tournament (August 24)
Six-person teams compete in this fast-paced, round-robin water polo
tournament that is played while sitting on surfboards – exactly how
Duke and his fellow watermen did decades ago. Held at Kapahulu Groin,
last year’s teams included lifeguards from the City and County of
Honolulu, Los Angeles County and the University of Hawaii Wahine.
- Waikiki Lei Parade and Draping of Duke’s Statue (August 24)
This colorful Waikiki Beach tradition features the decorating of Duke’s
Statue with bundles of fresh flower lei, all of which are carried on
surfboards as part of a sidewalk lei parade along Kalakaua Avenue.
- The Great Hawaiian 105 KINE Luau (August 23) Featuring classic Hawaiian music and ono Hawaiian food, this is the ultimate luau in celebration of Duke and Waikiki Beach. Proceeds go to ODKF’s college scholarships and athletic grants program.
- Splash and Dash at Hilton Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon (August 17)
This newest event of Duke’s OceanFest will be a fun-filled competition
featuring community swim clubs in all age groups. The Splash and Dash
will be open to all competitors.
- Waterman Challenge (August 23).
This exciting relay race is a team competition consisting of a 500-yard
swim, 1,000-yard paddleboard race, and 2,000-yard canoe race. Top
lifeguard teams from Hawaii and California along with teams from local
canoe clubs showcase the skills of being a waterman. The winning team
receives the Waterman Perpetual Trophy.
