On Friday, April 17, 2009 we marked the completion of the C4 Waterman/Bud Light stand up paddleboards project. It took a huge combined effort to make this happen, especially in such a short time frame. This is the first time that this large of a batch of 20 boards had been attempted, also using some new graphics techniques.
Todd Bradley, President of C4 Waterman had received some interest from the folks at Bud Light wanting to do some promotional “Point of Purchase” projects for Hawaii. Todd gave them the affirm, “We can do it!” There was some discussion on how to do the combined C4/ Bud Light Graphics: whether to use airbrush or a combination of airbrush and laminates. Graphic expert John Thomas (JT) worked with the folks at C4 Hawaii, and Jerry and Jason at Headline Graphics to come up with a design. Jason, of Headline Graphics in Cardiff by the Sea, printed the large full length laminate on a special photo cloth, which encompassed both company's logos, as seen below.

The blanks were provided by Jeff Holtby at US Blanks which were light, consistent, white and strong. The blanks were cut into a Dave Parmenter shape known as the 10’ Da Classic Chip; a thinner more high performance “longboard” style standup paddle board, which combines stability with a responsive, thin, light feel. The blanks were cut by Rudy and Brando at the Roughhouse.

Micheal Andrews then did the final shaping on each of the boards to ensure that they were flawless.

After getting the undivided attention of Micheal, next Johnny took over the laminating duties combining the photo laminate cloth with the fiberglass in a way that would ensure a strong bond, and also enhance the “visuals” of the graphic, because the boards were to be not only beautiful, but are intended to be ridden with high performance functionality.

After Lamination and hot coating, Kurt installed the finboxes and gloss coated the boards. Next Mark pinlined the bottoms of the boards on the border of the photo cloth and blank. In order to further blend the graphics, Mark did and airbrush “fog” that really tied the logos together.

Roy then did a masterful job of sanding and polishing the boards that made the graphics "pop." In celebration of a hard job completed in an outstanding and ahead of schedule fashion, a Bud Light and Rubio’s Tacos lunch fest ensued.

The boards were then boxed and sent over the “pond” by H2O logistics. Upon arrival the crew at C4 commenced unpacking and and installing deck pads; this was an all hands “barn-raising” event.

A huge Mahalo to all that made this happen: Tara, for setting up the shipping, Robby and Philip for getting us our shipping boxes, Jerry Anderson and Jason for the great print graphics and the lamination suggestions. Rudy, Brando and Chris for getting these blanks cut so timely. Jeff, at US Blanks for helping us as your new customers with such great service. Micheal Andrews, for getting some serious foam yardage. Roy, you are a super human for getting these large beasts sanded and polished in such record time. Kurt for getting all the finboxes placed. JT the graphic design is perfect! Mark, your pinlines are the “cherry on the top” thanks to you and Steve Ford. Rizu, your tireless effort to help me keep it all under budget and getting these fine folks paid. Last but not least, Josh and Ernie for keeping the wheels on this project when I was “moonlighting” with my “day-job”. The C4 Ohana of Hawaii made the deckpad production and installation a very pleasurable occasion; Dave came all the way out from the West Side to help. Dave, Tara, Rizu, Greg, Deano and Joe, your “cut and paste” skills were invaluable! All of you folks are in keeping with the highest traditions of the ancient sea fairing craft production; I am honored to be part of the crew…
