HAWAII VISITORS DISCOVER DUKE'S SPIRIT ALIVE & WELL 'DOWNUNDER' 301.jpg
Above: Sharing the spirit at Palm Beach, Sydney, Australia
HONOLULU (March 24, 2009) - Hawaii ambassadors Brian Keaulana, Todd Bradley, Dave Parmenter and Archie Kalepa have returned from a life-changing, "chicken skin" Waterman's Cultural Exchange visit to the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. The group from C4 Waterman set out to retrace the steps and relive the camaraderie Duke Kahanamoku experienced in Sydney during the summer of 1914.

Duke was the first Hawaiian to visit Australia to demonstrate surfing and share his aloha, and the group of watermen from Hawaii discovered that Australia has done much to keep his spirit alive.

During their week-long visit, Keaulana and friends met with many surf-related groups and individuals, including a visit with a young boy who was attacked by a shark just days before their arrival. They also surfed with the locals, visited Surf Lifesaving and Boardriders Clubs, and spoke at a public high school where they addressed 800 students on the Hawaiian heritage of surfing and paddling. All activities revolved around sharing and exchanging ideas, techniques and equipment that are integral to the ocean-going lives that Australians and Hawaiians share.

Lele Wa'a or Canoe Jumping

Copied from Hawaiian History.org.  Kamehameha and his favorite wife, Ka`ahumanu, both talented board surfers, also excelled at canoe surfing and lele wa`a, or canoe leaping. In lele wa`a, the surfer leapt from a canoe onto his board and rode the wave crest as the canoe slid down the back of the wave. Kauikeauoli (Kamehameha III) was also a great athlete and surfer who, along with his sister Nahienaena, often surfed the breaks at Keauhou near their birthplace on Hawai`i island

Biggish on the 9-3

by C4 Team Manager Liam Wilmott

I am 6'2" and weigh 240lbs. That's about 119Kg's. I recently tried to go skydiving and found that I had to pay extra for every pound over 200. Thankfully the C4 9-3 Subvector holds no kind of pre-conditions for those over 200. Recently, I've cast aside the stigma I had towards epoxy boards. I used to think they were too corky and stiff. Now my favorite SUPs are epoxy. But, I must admit I, holding the 9-3 Sub Vector for the first time I found myself thinking, "This board is too floaty to turn hard."

The first time I tried it I was at 6-foot, super clean Jocko's. I ran it with a 7" middle and two 451 side fins from Future Fins (part of the Quad set up).  I found it to paddle unreal and be very forgiving from rail to rail, especially when trying to bring it back from the 'tipping point' or as all SUPers know as the 'embarrasing point'. That first session the center fin was all the way in the back of the box, maybe too far back because it was super tight to turn.

I took it for another session and put a 7" cutaway fin in (with the same 451 sides). I slid the fin nearly all the way forward in the box. It still had the same paddling ability but man did it surf better- I even had regular short boarders ask about the board.
Previously I thought that I would ride it in surf only up to about 6 feet. BUT, I took it out at a big-ish day at Hammerheads and got some great waves. It handled great on the big stuff. I love the stability and the performance of the Subvector. I'm a big fan.

P.S. I'm still yet to go skydiving and I don't know if I ever will- They can have it

New 9-8 in Action

Photographer Dana Edmunds was at Makaha the other day shooting an ad for Maui Jims and saw this guy stand up paddle surfing on a C4 board. He said, "The guy was just ripping." Turns out it was team rider Greg Pavao on the custom poly Subvector shaped by Dave Parmenter. Yes, it's based on Parmenter's now infamous 9-3 Subvector. A Boardworks version may follow.

Greg Carson won the first annual Hobie SUP race held in January on a C4 Waterman Holoholo in what he described as tough conditions, "through surf, headwinds and storms." He's also been enjoying some good surf along with Thomas Kosmoll.
