Wahine Gone Wild

C4 Waterman Field Report # 035

Where: Maui’s south shore.

When: August 2008

Weather: Summer…couldn’t be better!

Surf: Smallish but very fun!!

The Mission: To get a few wahine together to have some fun on a “stand-up paddle board-only” surf trip to Maui.

After months of planning, we our gathered our gear and hit the road. Most of the girls flew to Maui, but Claudia Parmenter, Joan Fukumoto and I braved an early morning passage on the Superferry. This was a maiden voyage for Joan and I and we were impressed with how easy it was, thanks to the excellent coordination by the Superferry staff, to drive right aboard and park. The ride up and around the north shore of Molokai was a little bumpy but manageable and the scenery was just awesome.

Rainbow Battle of the Paddle Video Slideshow

One of the biggest Stand-up events ever, Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, was held Oct. 11 at Doheny State Beach in California. Conditions were tough with a strong headwind. C4 team rider Tiare Lawrence said, "A lot of people dropped out. I almost quit, but since I'd traveled so far, I kept going and finished. It was the toughest race I've ever done on stand-up."

Check out this extra long video slideshow...and click READ MORE for the complete results and a link to the race website.

The Tale of the Octopus BK Pro

 octopus.jpg

This is a short narrative of a custom project that came from the imagination of Robert Martini. Robert is a Florida lifeguard, and had told his grandmother that he had wanted a tattoo of an octopus on his arm… His grandmother talked him out of the tattoo, or to at least wait...

This order from Robert for a Semi-custom polyester 10’ BK Pro Stand Up Paddleboard,( a Dave Parmenter/ Brian Keaulana design) that had an unusual request: “…is there any way that an Octopus could be on the bottom of the board with it’s tentacles wrapping around to the deck of this board?” The first thing that I thought of was the illustrated monsters that Melville would have used in some of his 19th Century sea tales. I commenced looking for a suitable kraken that had a fearsome enough demeanor that would have had Captain Nemo shaking in his jack boots. As Dr Evil implied that it should at least be “…ill tempered”.
