C4 Hawaii with Bud Light Boards (l-r): Joe, Greg, Deano, Rizu, Tara and Liam

On Friday, April 17, 2009 we marked the completion of the C4 Waterman/Bud Light stand up paddleboards project. It took a huge combined effort to make this happen, especially in such a short time frame. This is the first time that this large of a batch of 20 boards had been attempted, also using some new graphics techniques.
Todd Bradley, President of C4 Waterman had received some interest from the folks at Bud Light wanting to do some promotional “Point of Purchase” projects for Hawaii. Todd gave them the affirm, “We can do it!” There was some discussion on how to do the combined C4/ Bud Light Graphics: whether to use airbrush or a combination of airbrush and laminates. Graphic expert John Thomas (JT) worked with the folks at C4 Hawaii, and Jerry and Jason at Headline Graphics to come up with a design. Jason, of Headline Graphics in Cardiff by the Sea, printed the large full length laminate on a special photo cloth, which encompassed both company's logos, as seen below. budlight_3.jpg

The blanks were provided by Jeff Holtby at US Blanks which were light, consistent, white and strong. The blanks were cut into a Dave Parmenter shape known as the 10’ Da Classic Chip; a thinner more high performance “longboard” style standup paddle board, which combines stability with a responsive, thin, light feel. The blanks were cut by Rudy and Brando at the Roughhouse.

Micheal Andrews then did the final shaping on each of the boards to ensure that they were flawless.

After getting the undivided attention of Micheal, next Johnny took over the laminating duties combining the photo laminate cloth with the fiberglass in a way that would ensure a strong bond, and also enhance the “visuals” of the graphic, because the boards were to be not only beautiful, but are intended to be ridden with high performance functionality.

After Lamination and hot coating, Kurt installed the finboxes and gloss coated the boards. Next Mark pinlined the bottoms of the boards on the border of the photo cloth and blank. In order to further blend the graphics, Mark did and airbrush “fog” that really tied the logos together.

Roy then did a masterful job of sanding and polishing the boards that made the graphics "pop." In celebration of a hard job completed in an outstanding and ahead of schedule fashion, a Bud Light and Rubio’s Tacos lunch fest ensued.

The boards were then boxed and sent over the “pond” by H2O logistics. Upon arrival the crew at C4 commenced unpacking and and installing deck pads; this was an all hands “barn-raising” event.

A huge Mahalo to all that made this happen: Tara, for setting up the shipping, Robby and Philip for getting us our shipping boxes, Jerry Anderson and Jason for the great print graphics and the lamination suggestions. Rudy, Brando and Chris for getting these blanks cut so timely. Jeff, at US Blanks for helping us as your new customers with such great service. Micheal Andrews, for getting some serious foam yardage. Roy, you are a super human for getting these large beasts sanded and polished in such record time. Kurt for getting all the finboxes placed. JT the graphic design is perfect! Mark, your pinlines are the “cherry on the top” thanks to you and Steve Ford. Rizu, your tireless effort to help me keep it all under budget and getting these fine folks paid. Last but not least, Josh and Ernie for keeping the wheels on this project when I was “moonlighting” with my “day-job”. The C4 Ohana of Hawaii made the deckpad production and installation a very pleasurable occasion; Dave came all the way out from the West Side to help. Dave, Tara, Rizu, Greg, Deano and Joe, your “cut and paste” skills were invaluable! All of you folks are in keeping with the highest traditions of the ancient sea fairing craft production; I am honored to be part of the crew…
Very Respectfully, Ted Rutherford C4

Colorado Kayak Supply PADDLEFEST

The 2009 Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship will be held May 31 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This one of a kind event will feature the world’s best river stand up paddlers displaying their paddling prowess on the snowmelt swollen Colorado River. This new and innovative competition is up for grabs. Local CO river SUP guru and owner of the Aspen Kayak Academy (www.aspenkayakacademy.com/index.htm ) Charlie MacArthur is one of the favorites, but the competition promises to be fierce.  A handful of Hawaii’s top stand up paddlers will be traveling to the mainland for the event. C4 Waterman will be well represented at the competition with a number of their SUP team heading to CO for this unique test of skill.

The event starts with an 6 mile downriver race on the Colorado River from Grizzly Creek to Two Rivers Park in downtown Glenwood Springs. This fast and furious whitewater balancing act will feature a mass start with the fastest paddler winning this segment of the championship. Next up is a timed "slalom" competition starting at the Two Rivers Park. Spectators should be plentiful as the championship is taking place in conjunction with the popular Yagatta Regatta (www.coloradoyagattaregatta.com/ ) – a popular annual river festival in Glenwood Springs. Competitors will race from the park to the top of the famous Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park (http://glenwoodwhitewaterpark.org ). This portion of the contest will involve catching a number of pre-determined eddies on both sides of the river on the way to an eddy above this massive whitewater play feature.

The championship will culminate with a surfing contest on this world famous wave. Each competitor will get 3 - 2 minute rides with the best score counting for  each surfer towards their final results. The champion(s) will be determined by  a point system with scoring accrued during the 3 events. After the surf contest, the SUPers would head back to the Two Rivers Park to celebrate during the Yagatta Regatta. This massive party features bands, food booths, thousands of river-stoked attendees and now will include the 2009 Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship’s award ceremony.  The first-ever whitewater stand up paddling champions will be crowned during this riverside rage.

Stay tuned as more detailed event information will be available on-line soon. As this epic event’s logistics are just being finalized and there is a short lead time to the big day, you can email paultefft@comcast.net for an immediate update on the world’s first whitewater stand up paddling championship.

On Saturday, 28 March the crew of four paddlers got underway in Ernie “EJ” and Andie Johnson’s 38’ Morgan sailboat, “Librada” from Dana Point to Avalon, Catalina Island. The “Skipper”, assembled the team. From North County Paddleboards (NCP): Brian Szmanski and Matt Friedman, two fantastic characters known all over California for their traditional paddleboard prowess in design and practice. Brian has numerous traditional stock class (12’) paddleboard victories in the Catalina Classic on his on self designed/built equipment. Mr Szmanski is also one of the spiritual ringleaders of the traditional paddleboard renaissance in San Diego County. Brian’s partner in NCP , Matt “Frito” Friedman, a tougher, more solid, salt of the earth gentleman there is not. Matt and Brian have recently starting building stock class (12’6”) flatwater stand-up paddleboards. EJ has been winning most of the latest stock class races on an NCP stock 22” wide missile that most paddlers could not even stay mounted on. EJ has an extreme work/training ethic that is legendary among the Orange County paddlers. EJ also builds strong, light wooden paddles (Johnson Big Sticks) www.johnsonbigstick.com.

The crew set out just abaft of dawn, in the mostly sunny morning, and was relieved to slip the cantankerous bounds of shore and responsibility.

Four paddle boards were brought on the crossing to accommodate potential sea and wind  conditions affecting the crew: 3 stock NCP designed and built SUP’s from EJ’s ultra narrow glassy water rocket to a never been “christened” rough water stock board in the “desert camo”.  A C4 Vortice XP was also brought in case the conditions warranted an even more “seaworthy” board for high winds and a strong following sea.
image004.jpg
All four boards were paddled by the crew, and based on the forecasted sea-state and winds the new NCP 12’6” board was chosen. The race meeting took place ashore amongst many familiar faces:

After a nice supper ashore the crew retired early to sounds of much mayhem and merriment ashore, as “spring-break” was commencing. The next morning dawned with a dreary red sky with low scud on the horizon.
image006.jpg
Skipper EJ motivated the crew with a calliope of heavy metal music. One half hour before the start we slipped the mooring lines and got underway to the race start area of “Lover’s Cove”, just to the south east of Avalon Bay.
