HONOLULU - (July 27, 2008) -- Hawaii's
Duane DeSoto proved to be exactly the kind of waterman C4 had in mind
when they sponsored the C4 Waterman Stand-up division of the
QuiksilverEdition Molokai to Oahu paddleboard race. On Friday, DeSoto
was busy winning a high profile professional longboard event in
Waikiki. On Saturday, he was aboard a boat cutting through the chop and
swells en-route to Molokai. Today, he won the most gruelling division
of the race in his first solo attempt of the Ka'Iwi Channel.

Standing feet planted for 32 miles, paddling stroke
after stroke towards Oahu with a one-ended paddle, today's conditions
were the ultimate test of balance on water for the record field of
stand-up paddlers.
Only five paddlers were crazy enough to
take on the solo stand-up category and DeSoto was the clear winner in a
time of 6:17:06 - 22 minutes outside of the record set last year by
Kauai's Kevin Horgan.
Horgan was another of the solo stand-up
paddlers today, finishing second to DeSoto in a time of 6:45:33. Third
was Kevin Seid (Haleiwa, HI), fourth was Phillip Gregory (Queensland,
Australia), and fifth was the only female solo entry, Morgan Hoesterey
(Honolulu, HI) 8:54:00.

"Friday was good, Sunday was even better," said DeSoto.
"It was one of those accomplishments I never thought I was going to get
a chance to do. I'm incredibly happy to be able to do something like
that in my life.
"I think that's the longest I've ever stood in one place for. It was tough!
Finishing was my priority. Winning was a bonus."
Maui
brother team Dave and Ekolu Kalama were the first 2-person stand-up
team across the channel today (4:50:02); second was Scott Trudon/Alan
Cadiz (5:16:33, Maui); and third was Greg Sheehan/Philip Binney
(5:46:34, Maui).
In the SUP team stock, Buzzy Kerbox &
Campbell Farrell (Maui/NZ) were the first non-rudder stand-up team to
finish (5:33:02, followed by the father-son team of Todd &
Christian Bradley (5:35:47, Honolulu, HI). Christian Bradley was also
the youngest paddler in the field at 18 years of age. Third place in
this division was Greg Pavao & Noland Martin (5:37:35, Waianae, HI).
The
QuiksilverEdition/C4 Waterman Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race is the
unofficial world championship of paddleboarding. The race covers the
32-mile distance from Molokai's northern shore to Oahu's Maunalua Bay -
without doubt, the longest SUP race in the world.
