Travis Grant is Fast…Travis Grant is FIRST!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HONOLULU (May 9, 2012) - One year ago at the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii, Travis Grant (AUS) lined up for his first race under the C4 Waterman label. Beneath his feet was a brand new 12’6 custom race board shaped by Dave Parmenter. In his hands was one of the first prototypes of the C4 X-Wing paddle.

After clinching gold on the same board at the ISA games in Peru in (March), Travis brought it back to Hawaii for the Quiksilver Waikiki Paddle Festival last weekend and ran away with first place in Jamie Mitchell’s own elite “Survivor SUP” Race. Danny Ching second, Mitchell third.

That result capped off a perfect 12-month trifecta of elite race victories that has both the C4 brand and Travis soaring.

“There is something magic about this board and paddle combination, I don’t know what it is exactly but it’s so fast,” said Grant, “and the paddle is like doing 80% of the effort with 100% of the results.”

“Lets not forget that obviously Travis is an amazing athlete” said Todd Bradley, CEO of C4 Waterman. “He deserves a huge amount of recognition. What we’ve done is simply utilize the C4 data bank of SUP and paddling knowledge to providing him with the best tools in the market place.”

C4 Waterman released Travis’ winning board, now called the TGIF Pro Model, in August 2011 at the Outdoor Retailer trade show along with the X-Wing paddle. The TGIFproduction board has been widened by 1″ from the original to accommodate more paddlers. All other specs and design characteristics remain unchanged.

Our Trip was a Huge Success.
Thanks to all the volunteers, our sponsors and those who donated.

I want to start by saying thank you, the trip would not have been possible with out everyones help. Now that the dust has settled and the kids at the orphanage are all basically SUP pros our real work begins.

In early February we were able to show up at the Casa-Guatemala Orphanage and School with a group of ten volunteers. Our crew had varied backgrounds and were from all over the US, UK and Mexico. Our volunteers ranged from guides to doctors and everything in between, we had all our bases covered . We were able to donate money we raised, contribute lots of medical supplies and buy materials for projects we worked on. We cleaned, painted, helped in the classroom, on the playground, on the water, and in the clinic.

When we arrived with the donations, via skiff, we were greeted by about 100 kids, they were so excited about the boards and us being there that we felt successful within five minutes off the dock. I don’t think I have laughed so hard or smiled so much ever. Since the school, orphanage and surrounding villages are only accessible by boat all the kids are water babies and the first day we got them out on the paddleboards they showed us their stuff. I have never seen happier children who have so little. The kids were warm, affectionate and all smiles. They were so curious about us and swarmed our media guys or anyone holding a camera. The months of work and expense leading up to the trip was all worth it within seconds of being at the orphanage and getting all kids out on the water. With that being said there is still a lot of work to be done but, our group is as committed as ever.

One of the main objectives of the trip was to document the entire thing and create awareness for our cause. All the images and video we captured are amazing. Special thanks to Nicholas Laclair, our cinematographer, and Peter MCdermott, our Photographer, and all the other photographers and assistants that made it happen. We have some hurdles to overcome in order to get our piece edited and ready for the Teva Mountain Games Mountain Reel Film Festival in June. The end goal here is to help the kids and use the film as a platform for awareness and a way to generate exposure and money for the orphanage and school.

This week we will all be back to the states and editing footage and fundraising for the project. Stay tuned for updates and thanks for your help. Check out the Deflated site for images and updates from the project. Spread the word! Encourage people to DONATE! We should have a Kickstarter up soon and hope to generate a big part of our post production budget from that.

Thank You All So Much!

HONOLULU (April 9, 2012) – The United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) has exclusively designated the C4 Waterman iRescue Board as the official rescue board of the USLA and the C4 Waterman iRescue Sled as the official rescue sled of the USLA. The endorsement sheds light on the newest rescue technology available in the United States.

“C4’s inflatable products are the cutting edge in lifesaving, offering an enhanced level of performance that was unavailable until now,” said B. Chris Brewster, President of the USLA. “They’re light, tough, and transportable, a real innovation.”

Veteran watermen and Hawaii ocean lifeguards Archie Kalepa and Brian Keaulana innovated and designed the range. Together they built and tested each model to make sure it meets the needs of the rescuer and the rescued.

“The best thing about these products is not the longevity or the storage benefits, but the technology,” says Kalepa, who has been an active part of C4 Waterman since 2006. “C4‘s Rigid AirCore technology means that our equipment can go where hard boards cannot, which ultimately makes them safer for both the lifeguard and the victim.”

C4 Waterman’s iRESCUE products do not use regular fiberglass construction, EVA foam or epoxy composite layups commonly employed today. Instead they use C4’s Rigid AirCore Technology, making them tough and unbreakable tools, capable of performing well and surviving heavy situations without damage.

C4 Waterman will also offer USLA members access to exclusive pricing on their extensive line of products, including stand up paddle boards, surf boards, paddles, clothing and accessories.

In 2011, the iRESCUE products underwent the strict testing programs of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) to become the first and only rescue board to receive their certification.

—-

The United States Lifesaving Association is America’s nonprofit, professional association of beach lifeguards and open water rescuers. Its membership is made up of the professionals who guard our coastline and waterways, challenging the elements to effect over 50,000 rescues from drowning each year.
C4 Waterman, Inc. is an Oahu, Hawaii-based lifestyle and adventure sports equipment company. They are a brand focused on providing the highest quality hard goods and soft goods to water sports athletes and enthusiasts around the world. C4 was the first company with a focus on SUP and continues to lead the pack when it comes to industry recognition, authenticity, innovation and product design.

Honolulu- February 28, 2012 – C4 Waterman consolidated a growing presence in Japan this February with the launch of its new and expanded line of stand-up paddle-sports and rescue equipment at the Interstyle Show in Tokyo, Japan.

Taking the helm of C4 Japan is Toshiya Omi, one of the most prominent figures in the Japanese surfing world. Omi is the President of his own Outdoor Accessories Company and the President of the Association of Surfing Professionals (A.S.P.) Japan, and has strong ties with Hawaii, especially in Makaha, where he is known as “Omi-san” and has been a beloved member of the Keaulana extended family for decades.

“A lot of people remember that modern stand-up surfing came of age at Makaha,” said Omi, “with the very first SUP contest 8 years ago at Uncle Buffalo’s Big Board Classic, but they have no idea that only a few months later Brian introduced stand-up surfing here in Japan at Kugenuma with an SUP division in the Real B Voice Buffalo Surfing Classic Japan. Before that I think I was the first person to do SUP in Japan.”

Makaha stand-up surfing pioneer and co-founder of C4 Waterman Brian Keaulana has traveled to Japan more times than he has been to the mainland USA. He has a deep understanding of the Japanese culture and surf scene. “Omi is like my Japanese brother,” said Keaulana. “In Japan you have to walk the walk and talk the talk, and Omi knows this better than anyone. Like us Hawaiians, the Japanese have a deep reverence for tradition and their culture, so they really understand the core values that C4 stands for.”

Omi agrees and nominates his close ties with Brian and his family as vital to his enthusiasm about C4 Waterman’s growth in Japan. “Brian and I have been friends for over 30 years and have shared many adventures together. The launch of C4 Japan gives me the opportunity to join the resources of my present distribution company, Kokunai Tsushima Co, with that of C4 Waterman. I plan to use my knowledge of Japanese business culture with my experience in surfing, rescue, and outdoor sports to build C4 into a strong brand nationwide.”

The alliance of Brian Keaulana’s authenticity and Hawaiian roots, and Toshiya Omi’s prestige and ability, made the C4 Waterman Japan booth a very busy place at the trade show. C4 co-founder and CEO Todd Bradley claims he hasn’t seen that kind of excitement in the market since C4’s launch as the world’s very first stand-alone SUP company at the Action Sports Retailer Show back in January 2007. “We are blessed to be involved with a pro like Omi. It was so amazing to watch him take the C4 product line and just run with it,” said Bradley. “In a really short time he has put together a solid business base for C4 in all aspects of what we represent not only as a business but as a culture. He’s ready to build up the C4 brand to its full potential here in Japan, not only in the surf segment but also in the outdoor recreation and professional rescue market, too.”

The close ties between Hawaii and Japan lead Omi to believe that the C4 Waterman ethos will thrive in his country. “I was overwhelmed with the success of the C4 Japan launch at the Interstyle Show.” said Omi. “To have both Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley here really helped validate the strength that the C4 brand has created worldwide.”

Travis Grant (AUS) and C4 Waterman Ambassador rounds a buoy during the ISA SUP Technical Race in Peru on Friday, February 24, 2012. Photos/ISA.

Playa La Pampilla. Miraflores. Lima, Peru (Feb. 24, 2012) — Elite stand-up paddler (SUP) Travis Grant has won Gold at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Stand Up Paddle Championships. Team Australia took first and second in the SUP elite mens race, Jamie Mitchell runner-up to Grant, to further extend their lead in the overall standings.

“It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Grant. “But to come all this way to Peru and win Gold means a lot to me, not just personally but also to win it while I am representing Australia means so much. I hope every one enjoys this back home.”

In a thrilling final, competitors from 17 countries raced a crisscrossing buoy course through the surf. Midway thru the second lap it was clear that the race was down to two Queensland paddlers: Grant, from Tweed Heads, and fellow team mate Jamie Mitchell, from the Gold Coast. For much of the race, Grant was on Mitchell’s tail. But on the last lap of the course he managed to swing wide inside Mitchell and take a wave to pass him, opening a seemingly unbridgeable gap of 12-15 board lengths with three buoy turns to go.

“At that point I just went as hard as I could go to hold that lead,” said Grant. “You never know with surf racing what you’re going to get, and if anyone could catch me up it would beJamie.”

Mitchell is a 10X World Champion for Prone Paddle boarding and also an elite SUP racer.

By the time they hit the last buoy the gap was reduced to about nine board lengths. Mitchell caught a wave to catch Grant and both rode the same line of whitewater to the finish line. Mitchell had achieved the seemingly impossible task of catching Travis and it came down to a running sprint up the finish chute.

Mitchell crossed the beach finish line first but had dropped his paddle on the beach and had to return to retrieve it, allowing Grant to take the win. It was an uncharacteristic mistake that Jamie had no explanation for.

“There’s no excuse, it was just a real unfortunate mistake,” said Mitchell. “I’m really angry with myself, but losing to Travis is OK, he’s consistently been one of the top SUP paddlers in the world so congratulations to him. Also, having team Australia get first and second is great for our country.”

“I am truly excited about this team” said Zulim at C4 Waterman’s new California distribution center, “each of these reps share my passion for the brand and providing quality service for their accounts.”

Back in August 2007, C4 Waterman was the first sport-specific SUP company to host at a trade show, a time that would become known as the birth of the industry. “We are thrilled to once again lead the way by presenting C4’s groundbreaking 2012 collection at both venues this month,” added Zulim. With a dozen revolutionary new SUP boardsand paddles on tap for all abilities and water types, the line also includes C4’s newSUBNine roster of short high-performance hard boards and Rigid AirCore inflatables.

While the Florida show is a seasonal go-to for the paddle-sports community, the winter show in Utah has yet to receive industry recognition, until now. “Our corporate vision,” says C4 CEO and co-founder Todd Bradley, “is to support the consumer and retailer year round with the latest in technology and innovation. Given the purchasing trends in our industry, we feel being at the Winter OR will provide the retailer with shorter lead times in ordering, especially for those that might have been fence-sitting at this past summer’s OR. We are looking forward to a year of converting innovation into sales.”

Leading Paddlesports Company Enters Joint Venture To Build New FeatherCore Composite™ Line

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Honolulu, Hawaii September 29, 2011

C4 Waterman, Inc. is excited to announce that it has completed negotiations to have all its SUP models manufactured at a new factory in Asia. Three weeks after canceling its exclusive licensing agreement with Boardworks Surf, C4 has entered into a joint venture with the factory, an innovative, molded-composite builder that will be the exclusive manufacturer of the company’s 12 radical new SUP models as well as its substantial legacy line.

C4 Waterman CEO Todd Bradley and shaper/designer Dave Parmenter have collaborated with the technicians at the new factory to develop C4′s newFeatherCore Composite™ fabrication technique, an advanced form of composite sandwich construction based on the engineering principles related to the unique core-to-skin ratio of stand-up paddleboards. The FeatherCore Composite™ process achieves lighter, friskier SUPs, possesses enhanced molecular and mechanical bonds of all the laminants/facings to the lightweight core, and delivers it all inexpensively and with ‘greener’ materials than the norm.

“I am very pleased with our new factory and partners,” said C4 CEO Todd Bradley after his recent visit to the new factory. “They’re young, eager, highly-educated individuals, and they are all VERY talented in composite technology systems. They’ve already got most of our molds on the floor and will begin to ship product immediately, allowing us to be ready for full global distribution by Spring 2012 season, and at a very competitive price.”

C4 designer/VP Dave Parmenter agrees: “After spending the last two years designing and testing a whole quiver of new models from 8’4″ to 12’6″, this is refreshing news for us, as there have been rumors floating around that we were not ready to take on the task of servicing the C4 brand after leaving Boardworks. On the contrary, we are loaded for bear now. The new SUB9 line, and the expanded, renovated C4 line of SUPs are going to surprise a lot of people. We have a 9’2″ Mark Richards Model that MR and I collaborated on, and I guarantee that it’s gonna be a bombshell; it’ll even have MR’s famous logo and colorways! We are in complete control of our production and distribution now, we have a radical new inflatable technology, patent-pending paddle designs, and a new sport-specific accessory and apparel line. And best of all, we have Ty Zulim, recently hired to be of Global Sales Manager of C4. With Ty and his new sales rep network, I am confident we are finally going to be able to satisfy all our loyal customers who have been waiting the last few years for our brand to stop hanging fire. ”

C4 Waterman, Inc. was founded in 2007 on the four core disciplines that apply to the ocean as much as they do to life: balance, endurance, strength and tradition. C4 is a waterman-owned and operated paddlesports company based in Hawaii, and the employee roster includes some the world’s most respected watermen – Todd Bradley, Brian Keaulana, Dave Parmenter and Archie Kalepa. Honolulu’s C4 Waterman Inc. continues to forge ground as a worldwide leader and pioneer in the action water sports industry. For more information, please visit: www.c4waterman.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/c4watermanFan, on YouTube at www.youtube.com/c4waterman or email info@c4waterman.com.

###

More on the new FeatherCore Composite™ construction:

C4 Waterman’s new FeatherCore Composite™ line of SUPs is based on the rigorous refinement of the foam sandwich/composite structures to find the construction that best suits the unique needs of the next generation of high-performance stand-up paddleboards.

“Our testing has found that deck and bottom bamboo veneer laminates provide the lightest, strongest, least expensive ‘skin’ to complement our featherlight EPS-cored SUPs” said Dave Parmenter. “These very thin sheets of bamboo are sandwiched between successive layers of fiberglass and epoxy resin and then pressure molded around the EPS core. In effect this creates a monocoque fuselage, much like an aircraft, in which the skin of the surfboard acts as the stringer or stiffener. We’ve also changed the finish on our new range of boards to a classic gloss resin surfboard-style look and feel. No more chipping!”

Some advantages to bamboo veneer as a substrate in the foam-sandwich construction:

Bamboo veneer, when laminated with epoxy resins, endures more flex cycles than traditional fiberglass/resin lay-ups.

Bamboo veneer is a renewable resource that is cheaper than carbon fiber and less energy-consumptive to manufacture.

Bamboo is the strongest natural material on Earth on a strength-to-weight ratio.

Bamboo veneer as a laminate has incredible impact resistance, even when paper-thin, yet it is very permeable, allowing for an excellent mechanical bond to the core without excess resin absorption. The result is a very light SUP with unbeatable impact, tensile, and shear strengths.

Bamboo veneer as a composite skin possesses superior ‘flex appeal’; the stiff, twangy ‘life’ in a composite structure that is most conducive to high-performance surfboards and surfing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Honolulu, Hawaii, September 8, 2011

C4 Waterman, Inc. announces the re-launch of its C4 Waterman brand of boards and paddles with a streamlined list of refined models and color ways, which it will manufacture and distribute directly along with its recently released SUBNINE performance series.

“Due to the ever increasing demand for boards that perform well in a variety of conditions, we’ve revisited our legacy models and refined their designs,” said C4 Waterman founder/CEO Todd Bradley. “As always, stability, quality, performance and fun remain the cornerstones of any product we make.”

As the company that founded the sport of modern stand-up paddle surfing and distance racing with its innovative board and paddle designs, C4 is determined to push design and performance to the limit. To complement its extensive line of C4-branded epoxy SUP boards, the Honolulu-based company recently announced it was launching a skunkworks-based product line, SUBNINE (www.SUB9surf.com), helmed by C4 designer/shaper Dave Parmenter. This brand new collection of state-of-the-art high-performance SUP boards and paddles is capped off by a fleet of radical new Rigid AirCore inflatable models replete with a game-changing patent-pending removable-fin system. This system accommodates stiff, high-performance FCS surf fins to be used on any of the new air-cored C4/SUBNINE SUPs and conventional surfboards.

“The guiding principle behind all of my latest designs is ‘faster, looser, deeper,’” said Parmenter, a co-founder of C4 and the designer of all its surf and race boards. “I always want to remain progressive with my shapes. Now that we are distributing our own boards, offering those designs to the market ‘faster’ and at competitive prices ensures that our customers will be able to affordably ride the same equipment our team is surfing and racing in Hawaii that very season.”

With pent-up demand for fresh innovation from the world’s premium SUP brand at a fevered pitch, C4’s Global Sales Manager Ty Zulim is predicting a tornado in his Rolodex. “Now that C4 is manufacturing and distributing its own boards, we plan on being very competitive at the cash register. These new boards and paddles have been in R & D for a few years in Hawaii. They’re real game-changers, and the impact will be huge, maybe as significant as C4’s first line of production boards introduced in 2006. The new ‘X-WING’ paddle is a bombshell – it’s the biggest thing to hit paddles since Todd Bradley’s first all-carbon SUP paddle back in 2003.”

C4 Waterman, Inc. (www.C4Waterman.com) is a waterman-owned and operated paddle sports and rescue equipment company led by Todd Bradley, Dave Parmenter, Brian Keaulana, Bruce Raymond and Archie Kalepa.
